Dr. Demi Washington (pictured on the left), is the newest professor added to the communications department adding depth and energy to an already dedicated faculty. With an extensive academic background and a wealth of professional experience, Dr. Washington explains his story in an exclusive interview with my radio production class. I'm Jalyn Woodbury and this is Campus Connection!

Born and raised in Denmark, SC, Dr. Washington accelerated in highschool, graduating at 16-years-old then attending Morehouse College, Savannah State, Norfolk State, and earning his bachelor's degree at Jackson State. Continuing to pursue more education, he also got his masters at Northwestern, University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard while earning his Ph.D at Albany anUniversity of North Dakota.

Dr. Washington expertise is in Communications, more specifically investigative journalism, due to his views on transparency, when dealing with critical information that affects the people.

Incue: First, there's two things...
Outcome: Uncovering the mischief and theft

Dr. Washington has taught many courses such as communication, analytics, and public relations. One of the most challenging curriculum he has taken was from attending University of Pennsylvania.

SOT: Dr. Demi Washingtion :38
Incue: The hardest curricular...
Outcome: I would say University of Pennsylvania

Being an educator and a student that transferred to multiple universities, Dr. Washington explain that he's never complacent and aware that society is always changing and may need to improve to keep up with the modern world.

SOT: Dr. Demi Washingtion :31
Incue: I never become complacent...
Outcome: be prepared to leave at any moment

Dr. Washington doesn’t plan to stop his impressive career at South Carolina State. He hopes to continue expanding his professional ventures and even pursue larger leadership roles—whether that means advancing to a higher position at another university or stepping into public service as the mayor of an underdeveloped town where, as he puts it, he can “show them how it’s done.”

During this interview, I have learned that perseverance and determination is the sole resource of achieving goals and accomplishments despite all odds and setbacks, this is Jalyn Woodbury signing off with Campus Connection!

Jalyn's Radio Top Five

Click Here to Follow Along the Post

“Good day, listeners, and welcome to my radio! I’m your host, Jalyn Woodbury, and today we’re diving into a countdown that’s all about the music that moves me. From powerful vocals to unforgettable beats, I’m breaking down my top five favorite artists—the ones who stay on repeat and never miss. So tune in from your headphones, get ready to vibe with me as we explore the sounds, stories, and style behind the musicians who top my personal playlist. Let’s get this countdown started!”

Number one on my list is the undeniably multi-talented music legend Michael Jackson. He wasn’t just a singer—he was a true entertainer whose voice, dance moves, and creativity set the standard for pop music around the world. From timeless hits like “Thriller,” “Beat It,” and “Billie Jean” to his powerful performances and groundbreaking music videos, Michael Jackson transformed what it meant to be an artist. It was a difficult choice but "Heaven Can Wait" is my favorite song of his. For me, his artistry continues to inspire, making him the number-one artist on my list.

Second on the list is the insanely beautiful and talented, also a music legend, Beyonce. Her talent, versatility, and impact are unmatched. Every time she releases a song or steps on a stage, she delivers a level of artistry that feels powerful and intentional. Her vocals are incredible, her performances are electric, and her ability to blend genres shows just how creative she is. Beyond the music, Beyoncé inspires me through her confidence, work ethic, and the way she uses her platform to uplift others. Due to hits such as "YA YA" , she always brings something memorable, which is why she holds such a high spot on my list.

Third on the countdown is the soulful and musically intelligent pioneer, Stevie Wonder. His ability to blend genres—from R&B and funk to pop and jazz—shows a level of creativity that few artists can match. Songs like “Superstition,” “Isn’t She Lovely,” and “Sir Duke” highlight not only his smooth vocals but also his incredible talent as a songwriter and musician. His certified hit song "Ascan lift your spirits, make you think, and connect with you on a deeper level. That’s why he remains one of my all-time favorites.

My fourth favorite music artist is  Megan Thee Stallion due to her level of confidence, energy, and charisma that’s impossible to ignore. Her music is bold and empowering, with lyrics that celebrate independence, strength, and self-worth. Beyond her talent, her personality and authenticity shine through in everything she does, making her not just an artist I enjoy, but one I genuinely admire. Her songs like "He Think I Love Him" always hype me up, and that’s why she earns a solid spot in my top five.

Earning the fifth spot on my list is the lovely Bruno Mars. His ability to blend pop, R&B, funk, and soul makes every song feel fresh and full of energy. Bruno’s vocals, charisma, and showmanship always shine through with hits such as "Grenade" "24k Magic", and my favorite "Perm".  His music has a timeless feel, and he consistently brings a level of fun and creativity that keeps me coming back. Even as my tastes change, Bruno Mars remains one of those artists I can always count on for a good vibe.

“And that wraps up our countdown of my top five favorite music artists! Each one brings their own flavor, their own story, and their own energy—and together they make up the soundtrack of my everyday life. Thanks for tuning in and taking this musical journey with me. Until next time, keep listening, keep loving the music, and I’ll catch you on the next broadcast!”

"Brightening It Up" with Reflector Disk

A reflector disk is a simple yet powerful tool used in photography and videography to control and shape light. It works by bouncing existing light—whether natural sunlight or artificial illumination—onto your subject, reducing shadows and creating a more balanced exposure.

Click Here to View the Reflector Disk in Action

Avoiding taking photographs or shooting video into the sunlight can be difficult. This can shut down the camera's iris and make a person's face look darker than is desirable.

Here is Jalen Gasque's "before" photo.

Here is Jalen Gasque's "after" photo.

After the reflector disk is deployed, the lighthing on the subject has improved.

Here we see the choreography of where the video camera and disc are positioned.

Summer Gray holds the large disc so that it captures the direct sunlight and bounces it into Jalen's face. RJ Steadman stands behind the camera to mock a news broadcast.

Reflected light can be extremely bright—sometimes even blinding—so you should avoid placing it directly behind the camera. Instead, position it slightly off to the side.

This placement helps illuminate one side of the subject’s face, creating a more flattering and visually appealing look.

Here is another angle showing where the key players in this production are positioned.

Reflector discs, like the one held by Summer Gray, folds down to the size of frisbee and fits in a carry bag. It's a vital tool to have among a video producer's cameras, microphones and lights.

What I learned from completing this project is how to use a reflection disk to reduce sunlight behind a report to illuminate their face.

"Getting Lit" with Three-Point Lighting!

A mainstay of photography, videography, film, and television is three-point lighting. It uses three separate light sources: the key light, which is the main and strongest light that defines the subject’s overall form; the fill light, which softens shadows created by the key light and adds balance; and the back light (or rim light), which shines from behind to separate the subject from the background and create a sense of depth.

Below are images and descriptions of how I use three-point lighting on my fellow classmate, Shamari Blanding

WIDE SHOT WITH NO LIGHTS

Shamari Blanding (right) is at the center of this popular, widely-used lighting concept. You see the video camera's position in front of Shamari and the three lights surrounding her. The key light (tallest light on the left) is positioned at a 45-degree angle from the camera. You do not want it right behind the camera because it could be blinding to Shamari.

CLOSE-UP WITHOUT LIGHTS

This close-up shot of Shamari is without the lights on. Without the lights, the photo is darker and not highlighting her facial features. The background also looks dull and no shadows are casted behind her.

KEY LIGHT

Here is Shamari with the key light only. You see how it illuminates her face, especially her left side. So there's a big improvement already in the photo/video quality with just the 500-watt key light

But notice too how the right side of her face is shadowed. This leads us to the fill light (shown in the wide shot photo above along the right side). This light should not be as bright as the key light. If it is the same wattage, then the move is to pull it back from the subject because all we want the fill light to do is remove that shadow from the right of Shamari's face.

KEY LIGHT AND FILL LIGHT

Here is Shamari with both the key light and the fill light. Now the light is more evenly distributed and not leaving a shadow casted upon her face. The background is also more brighter in contrast to the key light only photo.

Next, we use the backlight. Scroll up a bit to see the wide shot (lighting placed behind Shamari). Note that the backlight is behind the subject on the same side as the key light

KEY LIGHT, FILL LIGHT AND BACKLIGHT

Here is the final photo with all three-point lighting. See how the backlight gives subtle illumination to Shamari's hair, clothing, and her left side temple area. The background also is much brighter in contrast to the photo above.

     WIDE SHOT WITH NO LIGHTS

Here's Shamari Blanding imitating the figure seen in the helpful diagram of the three-point lighting arrangement. Shining like the star she is!

What I learned from this project was how to use three-point lighting to properly light a subject and what each of the lighting does and how they capture the subject in photos.
